[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Message from M, Program Coordinator
“El Rescate is very honored to be part of the initiative of ending youth homelessness in the Midwest area by assisting youth in transitioning from surviving the streets to independence and adulthood. Young adults are often mistreated, misguided and find themselves in difficult situations in which they feel trapped. At El Rescate, our main focus is giving these young adults the opportunities and the tools they need to rebuild themselves and transition into independence.”
El Rescate Transitional Living Program provides culturally appropriate, identity-affirming housing for homeless LGBTQ and/or HIV-positive youth ages 18-24 through a continuum of solutions. As part of this program, youth have access to the HIV prevention services offered by Vida/SIDA as well as employment/educational resources and Living Skills Training.
Distrust amongst homeless youth around adults is very high and often for good reason. Out on the streets all alone, they had to form friendships and negotiate boundaries in survival mode. El Rescate is a stable setting where they learn to live with peers, set rules for common areas, share a bedroom, respect for others and especially for themselves.
El Rescate provided services to a total of 62 youth during 2015-2016 programming year that were complemented with annual achievements.
